Slimy secrets

Sin definir

Harvard researchers have discovered that Bacillus subtilis biofilm colonies exhibit an unmatched ability to repel a wide range of liquids — and even vapors. The finding holds promise for developing better ways to eliminate harmful biofilms that can clog pipes, contaminate food production and water supply systems, and lead to infections.

Renovation Reuses/Recycles 96%

Sin definir

When work began on the lower level of 625 Mass. Ave., the challenge wasn’t simply to renovate a space that had once been library stacks into space for Harvard College Library Technical Services (HCLTS) staff, but to do the work with as little environmental impact as possible. On both counts, the project was a success – the lower level is now an attractive workspace that houses dozens of employees, and approximately 96 percent of the items used in the project – including desks, chairs, lamps, flooring material and even 18 tons of library shelving – were either recycled or reused.

Conservation Work Saves Blackwood Films

Film conservators at the Harvard Film Archive (HFA) and Weissman Preservation Center recently completed a massive effort to slow or stop damage to thousands of hours of film – including hundreds of hours of one-of-a-kind out-takes – that capture virtually every important painter, sculptor, musician, film director, architect or choreographer working in the United States during the late 20th century.

Technology Speeds Audio Preservation

Sin definir

Students, faculty and researchers can now access audio materials faster than ever before, and audio engineers working in Loeb Music Library’s Audio Preservation Studio (APS) are enjoying streamlined workflows – both are the products of a nearly two-year-long collaboration between APS staff and Harvard College Library’s Information Technology Services (HCL ITS) unit. The end result of the cooperative effort was the installation earlier this year of a computer system designed to allow engineers to seamlessly work with digitized audio on both PCs and Macintosh computers, simplifying what had once been a frustratingly complex preservation process.

Harvard-Yenchings 2010 Holiday Cards

Each year since 1998, Harvard-Yenching Library has offered a series of holiday and note cards featuring images from interesting pieces in their collections.

For 2010, Kuniko McVey, Librarian for the Japanese Collection, and Raymond Lum, Librarian for the Western Languages Collection, have selected paired woodblock prints for our holiday and note cards. These woodblock prints, by Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900), depict a scene of a man emerging from a palanquin and a woman and a child attendant standing by.

Libraries Take Part in Digital Humanities Fair

Sin definir

Digital resources have transformed the face of scholarship, blurring the once bright lines between disciplines, and allowing scholars across the globe to draw on materials from half a world away as easily as materials located in their local library. Harvard’s libraries offer an array of digital services to deliver information to students and faculty, as well as tools to help them contextualize that information, ranging from virtual collections to scanned excerpts of books and journals delivered via email. To ensure library users know about the tools at their disposal, staff from across Harvard libraries last week took part in the Digital Humanities Fair held at the Barker Center.

What made Darwin first

Evolution icon Charles Darwin rushed “On the Origin of Species” into print to beat the competition, but neglected to credit early thinkers on the subject, who let him know it after the book’s 1859 publication, leading to his appended “Historical Sketch” in later editions.

Seeing double

Sin definir

By comparing the DNA of modern elephants from Africa and Asia to DNA extracted from two extinct species, the woolly mammoth and the mastodon, researchers have concluded that Africa has two — not one — species of elephant. Now that we know the forest and savanna elephants are two very different animals, the forest elephant should become a bigger priority for conservation purposes.
